Recommendation: Great introduction to cast iron

Lodge Cast Iron is the oldest and longest-running cast iron manufacturer in the United States and has been making cookware and accessories since 1896. The 10.25 inch classic cast iron skillet is their entry level pan, and can be found here on Amazon.
While this is the first cast iron pan that I have personally owned, I have had a lot of experience using them in the kitchens of friends and family. Compared to the pans that I used in the past, the Lodge skillet is able to hold up to the competition. Given the low entry price of around $20 I can’t imagine that there are many other skillets that can compete in terms of quality and accessibility.
This and many other Lodge skillets come “Pre-Seasoned”. Seasoning refers to the layers of oil baked into the cast iron that allows for the easy release of food from the surface and prevents rust. The more you use cast iron, the more this seasoning will build up, which improves the non-stick properties it provides. This and the durability of cast is why a well cared for skillet can last for generations. Buying a pre-seasoned pan allows you to begin cooking on your skillet right away without having to worry about food sticking or the pan rusting. The Lodge 10.25 Inch Skillet provides everything you would expect from cast iron. The skillet is crafted flawlessly, and feels incredibly durable. It is also oven safe, and holds heat fantastically. However, due to this I would recommend purchasing the version that includes a handle holder (Holder Color Variations) for a few extra dollars, as it will be hot to the touch when moving around. This is not something I bought initially, and regretted, as I had to use an oven mitt in the interim.
Overall this Lodge skillet is a beautiful piece of cookware that can handle any food you might throw at it. I would recommend it to anyone looking to begin a journey into the realm of cast iron.
